Prof. Shrikhande explained the importance of seismic resilience in the development of infrastructure of the country. Prof. Shrikhande highlighted how seismic resilience is the approach in earthquake engineering that introduces the time dimension to cover the post-event recovery phase. It also broadens the scope beyond the single structure, to systems and communities. In the wider sense, resilience incorporates technical, organization, social, economic and environmental issues. The current goal of minimizing casualties, economic and functionality loss, is extended to the requirement for the affected community or system to return to ‘normal’ conditions within the shortest possible time. The speaker also discussed how seismic sustainability is among the various factors that make cities safe and resilient. Seismic sustainability refers to the capacity of built structures to withstand the impact of earthquakes by incorporating certain benchmarks during construction. The most useful tools to determine seismic sustainability include vibration control, which augments the seismic fitness of structures, and base isolation, an assembly of special units that separate a building from the shaking ground, thereby enhancing its seismic performance. While these are recently developed specialized components, buildings can also be made earthquake-resistant by merely complying with stipulated standards. Fellow engineers, researchers, academicians and students appreciated the lecture and a live interaction session followed by a Question & Answer session with the expert. Er. M.M. Dalbehera, Hony.
