Roorkee (longitude: 77o 53′ 52″ and latitude: 29o 52′ 00″, an average elevation above sea level: 268 m) is situated 30 km south of Shivalik Himalayan range and is in district Haridwar of state of Uttaranchal, India.
Roorkee is situated at about 180 km north of New Delhi, the capital of India. The town is famous for the Upper Ganga Canal built by the British in 1854. The canal flows close to the IIT Capmus and many of the hydraulic structures on this canal are unique and bear testimony to the high level of Civil Engineering prevailing at that time, in this part of the world. The town of Roorkee is also known as Gateway to the Himalayan Ranges of North India and to the various pilgrimage centres like Haridwar, Rishikesh etc.
Roorkee is well connected by road and rail from Delhi. There is frequent and regular bus service to Roorkee from Inter State Bus Terminus (ISBT) of Delhi. Rail connection to Roorkee is on Howrah-Amritsar and Delhi-Dehradun Railway lines.
